The herbaceous plant develops shoots up to 2 meters long. In the rainy season, the plant sprout and forms bright red-violet flowers. The main root then forms long sprouts that lie on the ground and form tubers (secondary storage roots). The strikingly large flowers are light pink to crimson in colour. The fruits lignify into bizarre structures with sharp barbs, to which the name of the plant refers.
